The Soutpansberg presently boast one of the heights tree diversitys in Africa with 595 taxa so fare recorded. The first attempt to record the tree of the Soutpansberg was done in 1994 (Hahn, N 1994. Tree list of the Soutpansberg. Fantique Publishers) with a tally of 538 taxa. Since that time three additional endemic trees were described from the mountain namely Vangueria soutpansbergensis, Pavetta tshikondeni and Encephalartos hirsutus. In addition Brachystegia spiciformis has for the first time been found south of the Limpopo river. |
